a lot of '60s GM cars had the axle offset in the chassis, often by as much as ½ inch! Average is ¼ inch. From Coil Spring Cars to Leaf Sprung. And it was like that from at least the mid-60s to early ‘70s. Why? Dunno. Driveline vibration? Design oversight? So make sure when you are buying aftermarket wheels you check axle offset.
All 6-cylinder cars 1967, 1968, 1969 came with monol-eaf rear springs. All 1967 models used mono-leaf design rear springs. For 1968, only certain models with the 10 and 12-bolt rear end received multi-leaf springs. This included all SS models, the Z28, and the L30/M20 275 Horse 327 backed by the Muncie M20 4-speed. All other 1968 models used mono-leaf springs. In 1969, all models with 12-bolt axles received multi-leaf springs and all models with 350ci engines (10- or 12-bolt) received multi-leaf springs. Vehicles with 307 and 327 engines received mono-leaf springs. Generally, Z28's used 4-leaf springs and the other multi-leaf spring applications used 5-leaf springs. Spring selection was a function of weight and options - and this was fine-tuned in 1969. SS, LM1, L65, and COPO cars with 4-leaf springs are possible according to factory documentation and they have been observed on original SS, LM1, and L65 cars. Factory documentation indicates that all 68-69 Z28's should have 4-leaf springs. One Z28 (a 69) has been found with apparently original 5-leaf springs. The 5-leaf spring usage on a Z28 should not be considered normal and was probably a dealer installed option. [email protected] www.patreon.com/gasolinemedia |

4R70W Final PrepOur Wagon has been on this lift too long. Some of it is due to apathy some due to Coivd (driveshaft) and some due to other things being easier to button up. Today we are going to Systematically cover what needs to be done to get the Swagon ground bound and pounding again.
Torque converter bolts have been an issue. There are two thread pitches a fine and course. 23 to 28 ft/ lbs. We don’t have our inspection plate yet. It is on the way. The vent. We’ve mentioned this before but this is what it looks like we need to source a barbed fitting so we can add some sort of filter to let stuff out, but not let things in. Re-weld shift arm and set up. I welded it before Robert McCartney gave us our welding tips and fixed our welder. SO it is not tight. I can hear it ticking. Header Pipe/exhaust install. We need turn downs until we can get some 2 ¼ flex pipe and figure out how to run the exhaust through the jungle of axle tubes, leaf springs, shocks and rear sway bars. We can then take that to a shop and have it made up. Due to Covid David at Precision has not been able to get a bend for the Torino wagon duals. Plus we feel like with all this going on, we’d have to mod his system anyway. Flush coolant from radiator using diesel. We want a fresh start on the cooler and we don’t want any Type F in there. Fill trans with fluid. We are using Type V This is the correct fluid for an early 4R70W. The LV is a “Low Viscosity” Fluid and not compatible with the workings of the earlier transmission. Should You Coyote SwapWe had a viewer write in and say “just drop a Coyote in it”. And that sparked this video. To do a Coyote is not cheap in a classic Ford. We’re going to look at the swap.

4R70W Trouble Codes! |
We fight to get the 1969 Ford Fairlane Station wagon back on the road. But like most things that got fat and lazy during COVID, our Swagon was no exception. So we show how to truble shoot codes on the excellent US Shift Quick 4. And we find that the fault is ours and not the shift controller.
